Software Developer (Cloud - Kubernetes)
Passionate about the Cloud Arena? Have solid experience and understanding of modern development stacks including Git, Docker, Gitlab CICD pipelines, Kubernetes, Jira and Confluence? Then you might be just the right fit to join our new Software Development team as we move forward in our service offering.
Since 1999, Fasthosts has been designing new ways to give customers everything they need to manage and control their online space and we’ve become one of the leading internet technology businesses in the UK. We’re a team of tech-focus innovators, offering the latest innovations across our range of services including domain names, shared web hosting, business-class email, dedicated & virtual servers, cloud hosting, secure online storage and online backup.
We’re now planning for the next stage of growth and are currently implementing a shift from 'platform-only' provider to a full service management service. This is so we can improve our customers’ experiences and continue to be a world-class provider while differentiating ourselves in a crowded market. This role is part of a wider team being recruited to lead this shift in focus.
So what’s the job?
You will work in the development team currently focussed on developing Platform-as-a-Service products and services and supporting our very latest Cloud services, including Container Registry, Container Hosting, and App Hosting. This is a high-profile team and you will play a crucial role in designing and developing these next-generation products.
You will work alongside developer colleagues, reporting to the Team Lead. You will also work closely with Product Owners to clarify requirements, recommend solutions, design architectures, then ultimately code the product using suitable technologies.
You will need strong software engineering skills and be capable of coding in a range of languages, including PHP8 Laravel, Go, Java, Python - though any strong software skills would be valid (eg: .NET, C++). More importantly you will have a keen interest in the containerisation ecosystem, inducing Docker, Kubernetes, Operators, Prometheus, Alert Manager, Grafana, and more.
You may also assist in building front-end JAMstack applications - so knowledge of, and interest in, the PHP ecosystem, including Composer, Symfony, PHPUnit, as well as Typescript and VueJS would also be beneficial.
What will you get up to?
- Build rock-solid scalable solutions across a wide range of technologies
- Design with consideration to wider system architecture
- Meet the requirements of projects as they have been defined
- Work with product owners to refine project requirements
- Implement non-functional requirements as part of overall design and delivery
- Perform lifecycle management activities
What experience do you need under your belt?
Important:
- Software engineering, preferably at enterprise level
- Strong OO programming and knowledge of modern design principles
- Keen interest in Kubernetes ecosystem, including Docker, Kubernetes Operators, Prometheus, Grafana
- Languages and Frameworks: Go, Java, or any strongly-typed languages
- Microservice-oriented or serverless architectures
- Modern working practices, including CI/CD (Gitlab), Agile (scrum / Kanban) and automated testing
- Takes responsibility and works independently
Any of the following experience will help you in the role, but if it is new to you, or your knowledge is a bit rusty then look at this as the opportunity to expand your skillset!
- Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift
- Languages and Frameworks: PHP (8+) and Laravel, JavaScript/Typescript and VueJS composition API
- Knowledge of Containerisation or Cloud Platforms (Google Cloud Services, AWS, Digital Ocean).
- Familiarity with the contracts and standards described by the PHP Framework Interop Group
